A history shaped by independence.

1980s

In the Beginning

The roots of our team trace back to the late 1980s, when Norm Stern and Mike Heatwole began working together. They joined a Harrisonburg-based insurance agency and established a financial services division. Several years later, Christine Worontzoff joined the team.

1990s

At a Crossroads

As the business evolved through acquisitions in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the team found itself at a crossroads. Rather than compromise the way they served their clients, Norm, Mike, and Christine made the decision to take an independent path.

2000s

Renewed Resilience

In July 2001, Norm, Mike, and Christine founded Stern & Heatwole Financial Group, creating a practice where they could continue delivering the level of service and breadth of guidance their clients had come to expect.

In 2005, they partnered to build their office building at 305 Lucy Drive in Harrisonburg. Since then, the business has grown thoughtfully, expanding its team and continuing to serve clients throughout the Shenandoah Valley and beyond.

Today

The Legacy Continues

Over time, Norm and Mike retired after decades of service. Today, the team continues forward with the same guiding principles, supported by committed professionals who are carrying that legacy into the future.
